The story of Animal Love

Interview with writer and producer Mick Miller.

Why did Naked Flames become a comedy act?

It came naturally, it just happened. While we were recording "Ignite" I started writing songs for Joe, as he was now lead singer. I knew his sense of humour very well and I wanted to write songs that appealed to him. Joe would never laugh at a bad joke so the humour had to be very good.

What is the funniest song on the album?

I Said I Was A Rover always gets most laughs, although every song has its fans, just like every night has it's dawn, just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song.

What is Animal Love about?

Well, Joe says it's all about shagging but I'd like to think it goes just a little deeper than that. It is an extreme example of how love and sex are portrayed by the media, and by songwriters as well. Comedians should really study song lyrics, and the sincerity with which they are delivered, because there's a whole wealth of material there!

Do you not write serious music anymore?

We aim to really entertain our listeners with excellent music and comedy. A couple of songs, although 'tongue in cheek' are not really comedy but they rock to the max!

Is the humour offensive?

This album is 100% about entertainment. It's not about offending any group of people. The characters are imaginary extremes of human characteristics. It is rude in places but I have carefully avoided phrases that could be interpreted as offensive by any particular group. Generally, I think that offensiveness detracts from humour.

What are Naked Flames like as a live act?

We have gone acoustic as a live act because we get more laughs. Also, we are a total comedy act - costumes, props, the full works. We usually play alongside stand up comedians, but when we play with straight bands the audience is always really surprised and delighted. Playing live is great fun but we are careful not to over gig. We never want it to lose its sparkle.

What is the attitude of the band towards the current music scene?

For us, music is about entertaining people. If a band does not entertain me, they are a real turn off. I don't care how many albums they've sold - only accountants care about that.

What are your future plans?

Our third album "At The Comedy Festivals" has attracted record company interest and we have now signed a contract. It is due for release in April 2007 and will be receiving some serious promotion. Hopefully we will soon be able to record our live act on DVD, as visual antics are a big part of a comedy act. Then we would like to start recording our fourth album "Pissed, Sick and Filthy."
